Mama Tierra – Indigenous art in form of fashion
Do you agree that fashion is art?
It is the art of designing and creating something new… something that has a popular appeal…
The world is so diverse and several cultures mingle together everyday… The beauty of colours, textures and forms create clothes, shoes, hats, jewelry….
In a globalised world nothing is distant… fashion cross boarders… and enlighten people’s lives…
Recently I discovered Mama Tierra, which means mother earth in English – a Non Profit Organization which aims to help indigenous women of Colombia and Venezuela to sustain their families by perpetuating their culture with the creation of accessories based on their heritage…
https://www.mama-tierra.com/en/
Everything is beautiful and with a tropical appeal… well, we are talking about South America, right?… by looking at the pieces you can almost get transported to the warmth of these women’s smiles. I could see their faces of joy in the creating each one of them.
It inspired me to go on their website and check on what they do… the bags, the clutches, the hats… ah the hats…
Well, I am not much of a hat person… who knows me knows that well… my dermatologist keeps telling me that I MUST wear a hat… but I kind of do not follow well his advice…
Then, I saw Mama Tierra’s hats and immediately thought they were made for me… they were colorful and vibrant… everything I needed for the summer… They are to be more than a fashion accessory to me but a true indispensable piece of my wardrobe.
The hats are made by Wayuu-indigenous from La Guajira in Colombia… they are hand made and it takes about 8 hours of work to get ready….
I come across a lot of exquisite designers and things every day… this is the beauty of the blog… however it really pleases me when I have the opportunity to write about something which is great and has a social cause. It is not the first time that I support fashion artisans with their savoir faire… I hope it will not be the last one…
I invite you to visit Mama Tierra’s website… and see what I saw… the vibrant work of indigenous women who succeed in keeping their culture alive… It is you and me who can support them to move forward.
