As a woman, I want it all / Como mulher, quero tudo!

Yesterday was international woman’s day and I read a lot of articles, posts and messages about the day…

I must confess that some of the posts disturbed me as some women expressed their anger against the day… I agree with them that some of the young generation do not know or understand the meaning of the day, what happened over the decades that made women have a day recognized by the United Nations and also that women must not need a day to be remembered… We exist also in the other 364 days in the year…

I agree and disagree… The reason is simple equals should be treated equally, unequal unequally…

Without being a hypocrite we are not equal… We want and deserve to be equal to men,  but in fact we are still unequal. Women are stigmatized all over the world… Nothing about specific religions or cultures, because the inequality exists in all cultures and sociaties.  Women are still underpaid, overworked, given less opportunities, and overcharged, not to say disrespected, abused and bullied.

For that reason we do not need only a day, we need many other days, however one is a good start… No, I am not accepting a token… I am just saying that the recognition shows that we are right in our claim, that we are right in our fight for equality of choices and opportunities, that all the other women that fought and sacrifised for the right to vote, to work, to earn the same have acomplished their tasks…

Of course there is a lot more to be acomplished, there is it all, and we walking there… Never before women had so much voice, so much opportunities,  so much space, and we will have more and more.. Until such a time that we will be really equal and it will be silly the debate of  day, as men and women will understand that they do not exist without one and another…

Congratulations to us all… I accept the flowers, the compliments, the praise, the salary increase, the promotion, the right to speak… I thank every person who fought for this… I mean every person, without gender… There is still a long way to go, but we are also a long way down the road from the first step.. Let’s celebrate!
